Avila University
When the Sisters of St. Joseph arrived in the United States from France in the mid-1800s, they dedicated themselves to the “practice of all the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and which will most benefit the dear neighbor.” Founded on these principles, Avila University has continued their tradition in its mission and through its values.
Avila students are creative, passionate, and driven about making a difference in their communities and the world. Each year Avila students will volunteer more than 140,000 service hours in the community, across the country, and around the globe. Avila University is a values-based community of learning providing liberal arts, professional, undergraduate and graduate education to prepare students for responsible lifelong contributions to the global community. Avila is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Avila University is the home to two specialized centers: the CSJ Center for Heritage, Spirituality, and Service and the Buchanan Initiative for Peace and Nonviolence. Both focus on the core components of Avila’s mission, including:
- The heritage and charisma of Avila’s founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet,
- Excellence and continual growth in teaching and learning, and
- Opportunities for understanding and justice in our global community.
The CSJ Center and the Buchanan Initiative are integrated throughout our curriculum and student experience. They provide opportunities that empower students, faculty, and staff to develop lifelong learning, a global perspective, and service to the dear neighbor.
