Join us to learn about the practical opportunities and challenges of inbound foreign direct investment from China from the perspective of local communities and business partners, and Chinese investors themselves. The panel will also showcase new research on how well Chinese firms adapt to the U.S. legal environment. This event is open to the public and lunch will be served. A $10 ticket reserves your seat.

About the Panelists

  • Ji Li, Professor of Law, Rutgers University School of Law. Professor Li is the author of The Clash of Capitalisms? Chinese Companies in the United States (Cambridge University Press, 2018). He holds an Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University, and a J.D. from Yale Law School where he was an Olin Fellow in Law, Economics and Public Policy. He is a leading scholar on international business law, taxation, and Chinese law.
  • Representative of the China General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC). The CGCC’s mission is to promote Chinese investment in the United States and to enhance cooperation between the Chinese and U.S. business communities. More than 1,500 companies are members of the CGCC, and 55 CGCC members are ranked in the 2017 Fortune Global 500. CGCC members employ over 200,000 workers across the U.S. and invest approximately $50 billion across the United States.
  • Edward (Trip) Frizell, Partner, Polsinelli. Trip has deep experience in mergers & acquisitions, including representing companies in the Kansas City area in transactions involving Chinese acquirers.
  • Chris Gutierrez, President of KC SmartPort, a nonprofit economic development organization focused on attracting investment to the Greater Kansas City region.
  • Jeff Zhao, Vice President of Human Resources and Legal Affairs, BWI Group (Dayton, Ohio); Director, China General Chamber of Commerce. BWI Group is a supplier to GM, Ford, and BMW, and is a subsidiary of Shougang Corporation (China).


About the Moderator

Virginia Harper Ho, Associate Dean for International & Comparative Law, Professor of Law, University of Kansas School of Law, NCUSCR Public Intellectuals Program Fellow. Professor Harper Ho holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and previously represented companies engaged in foreign direct investment in China. She publishes on corporate governance, securities disclosure, sustainable finance, and related reforms affecting transnational corporations in both China and the U.S.
