Seaboard Corporation to be Honored for Contributions to Community Service
The Seaboard Corporation will be honored for their contributions to international commerce and community service at the 2010 Awards Banquet. Seaboard is a $3.3 billion international commodity trading and milling company that operates in ten African countries and in 17 countries in the Caribbean Basin and South America. In addition to operating in these countries, Seaboard and each of its operating divisions support various charitable organizations in each country’s local communities in which they operate. Below is a brief look at the various types of support the company provides.
- In 2006, the company built a maternity clinic in Matadi, Democratic Republic of Congo to provide low-cost and free basic healthcare to the impoverished.
- The company donates two percent of their net income in Lesotho, to a fund that is made available to the ministry of agriculture for agricultural projects such as block farming. They also operate an in-house HIV/AIDS clinic where each employee and their spouse are tested for free and positive employees receive anti-retroviral drugs.
- In Haiti, Seaboard partnered with the local cement company to fund the national electrical company’s construction and helped modernize the country’s power grid. The company also opened their port for relief aid after the devastating earthquake that struck the country in 2010.
- In 2009 alone, Seaboard donated over 32,120 kilos of grain, flour, and feed to over 21 different charities, cultural events, and social works in Zambia.
- In Columbia, the company hosts training seminars for local entrepreneurs who want to learn the baking craft. To date, they have trained over 130 small businessmen and women to enter the baking industry.
- In Kenya, the company helped fund the Rhino Ark Project to provide a 2000 square kilometer long game-proof electric fence around the Aberdare National Park to protect the ecosystem and rhino population. The fence was completed in 2009 and Seaboard continues to provide funds for maintenance and management of the fence.
